A leading developer in the global automation market, Pepperl+Fuchs is looking for a hardworking, ambitious individual to fill a Failure Analyst position for our facility in Katy, Texas.  Products include equipment and industrial computers for harsh environments. 

A successful candidate must be able to work in a fast pace environment while maintaining high standards of quality.  This job will require a strong sense of urgency, initiative, and drive to get things done correctly, with emphasis on working with people in the Quality and Production areas. 

The Failure Analyst will be responsible for a variety of functions including:

  • Lead, assist and train other technicians in the performance of similar duties.
  • Evaluate electrical, thermal and mechanical performance characteristics, hysteresis testing and sensing range of customer returns, to determine root cause of failure or condition for restocking.
  • Utilize forensic tools and methods not limited to product disassembly, nondestructive testing (visual examination, microscopy, electrical testing, fault isolation), and destructive testing (decapsulation, cross-sectioning) as well as forensic equipment not limited to oscilloscope, power supply, multimeter, and signal generator.
  • Provide written reports of analysis methods, failure modes, in formal 8D reports incorporated with charts, graphs, and photos as necessary.
  • Investigate and analyze discrepancies, product failures, product testing issues, supplier-related raw-material difficulties, and overall process or production control issues and expedites resolution.
  • Provide analytical and testing assistance to the Engineering Department for in-process development projects.
  • Ensure materials, tooling and test equipment required to support failure analysis capabilities are in place, calibrated and utilized and recommend use of new analytical tools, equipment and methodologies.
  • Interact with engineering and industry specifications, and product and quality engineers to determine product performance criteria and equipment and methods of testing and assessment.
  • Provide analytical and technical assistance to Sales and Customer Service concerning unusual problems or untried applications.
  • Assist technical staff concerning projects in process.
  • Review analysis Reports drafted by subordinate technicians, for content, accuracy and resolution.
  • Assist other departments with observed discrepancies during the course of assembly or testing.
  • Interact and communicate professionally on a regular basis with management, peers, associates, vendors, customers and the general public.
  • Assume additional responsibilities and performs special projects as needed or directed

Failure Analyst Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronic Engineering Technology or Associate’s degree with commensurate experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, use of the intranet and internet, use of ERP systems, and use of 8D root cause / corrective action softwares.
  • Well-developed analytical, critical thinking and problem solving abilities.
  • Well versed with various systems, tools, and procedures used in failure analysis.
  • Ability to read, write and interpret reports and business correspondence for a diverse audience.
  • Critical Thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to organize work, engage in a variety of tasks simultaneously and consistently meet deadlines.
  • High degree of initiative and independent judgment, considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Systems Analysis - Determining how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes.

  • Advanced competency with small electronics hand tools not limited to soldering, de-soldering, and Dremel power tool equipment as well as electronic forensic and measurement equipment, and the ability to determine proper equipment for the job.
  • Familiar with state of the art manufacturing methods including surface mount technology.
  • Ability to perform root cause analysis and to interpret electronic circuits from schematics.
  • Knowledge of circuit boards, microprocessors, chips, electronic equipment, Ethernet communication, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
